How to Connect an IBM Laptop to a Canon Pixma MX310 Printer
The Canon PIXMA MX310 is a multifunction device that combines the capabilities of a printer, scanner and copier into a single machine. The MX310's features include a maximum print resolution of 4800 by 1200 dpi, a maximum optical scan resolution of 1200 by 2400 dpi and copy speeds of up to 22 pages per minute (monochrome). If you have an IBM laptop, you can connect your printer via the computer's USB port and begin printing in a matter of minutes.

Examine the rear of the Canon PIXMA MX310 and locate the power port. Connect the power cord to the power port, then plug the remaining end into a nearby outlet. Examine the lower-left corner of the printer's rear panel and locate the USB and telephone ports. You may connect one end of the packaged telephone cord to the telephone port at this point, then plug the remaining end into a nearby phone jack.

Examine the front panel of the printer and press the power button, located by the left edge of the control panel. Use the navigation buttons (located underneath the control panel's LCD display) to select your desired language settings, then press the confirmation button (located between the two navigation buttons) to save your selection.

Lift the printer's scanning unit and lower the support bar, located under the front edge of the unit, slightly right of center. Wait for the print cartridge holder to move into view, then remove your print cartridges from their packaging. Insert the black ink cartridge in the print cartridge holder's left slot, then push up on the front edge of the cartridge to lock it in place. Insert the color ink cartridge in the right slot and repeat the installation process.

Look inside the printer and locate the printed serial number. Write this number down for later use. Raise the support bar and lower the scanning unit.

Press the power button to turn off the printer. Turn on your IBM laptop and log into Windows. Open your laptop's optical drive and insert the installation CD. Close the optical drive and wait for the installer application to launch (if it fails to launch, browse the CD's contents and launch the installer manually).

Click on the button labeled “Easy Install,” then click on the button labeled “Install.” Review the terms of the license agreement and click “Yes.” When prompted, plug one end of the USB cable into the printer's USB port, then connect the remaining end to an unused USB port on your laptop. Press the printer's power button, then wait for the installer to detect the device. Follow the on-screen instructions and enter your printer's serial number when prompted.
