1
Select heavyweight paper. Index stock or thin cardboard works best as it is lightweight enough to roll easily and is heavy enough to hold its shape. Consider colored paper or card stock to add a festive flair to the hat.
-
2
Measure the size of the child’s head to get a size for the hat. For a secure fit, measure the circumference of each child’s head slightly above the ears and across the forehead. Add ½ to 1 inch to this measurement to allow for overlapping of the edges.
-
-
3
Use the measurement as your guide and mark the length along the bottom of the paper on the 18-inch side. This creates the headband portion of the hat. Locate the center of the measurement and mark the spot opposite the headband on the top of the paper. Trace a triangle beginning at the marked center point and drawing a line to one edge of the headband. Repeat from the center point to the opposite end of the headband.

4
Cut out the triangle with a pair of scissors.
-
5
Roll the triangle into cone so the sides of the triangle meet and overlap slightly. Place one staple (or a piece of tape) in the bottom rim and try the hat on the child’s head. Adjust for a snug fit and staple or glue the seam to create the cone-shaped hat.
-
6
Decorate with paints, markers or crayons to create brightly colored hats. Add glitter or other embellishments to create the look you desire.
