      Determine your new business name. You must choose a name that is not being used by another company, that is not misleading and is not already registered by another company.

      Request a search for the name availability with the California Secretary of State. You can complete and mail a Name Availability Inquiry Letter to the California Secretary of State at:

      Complete an Application for Fictitious Business Name Statement. The statement will require the fictitious business name, the street address of the principal place of business, a mailing address (if different from the street address of the principal place of business), and names and addresses of the registered owners of the business.       File the Application for Fictitious Business Name Statement. You can mail it with the appropriate fees ($23 for original filing in 2010) to:

      For faster filing, you can take it to one of the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk offices. There are office locations in Norwalk, Van Nuys, Los Angeles and Lancaster.

      Purchase a newspaper advertisement stating your business name. California law requires that a person registering a fictitious business name in Los Angeles County advertise the name in a Los Angeles County newspaper.
