Determine your new business name. You must choose a name that is not being used by another company, that is not misleading and is not already registered by another company.

Request a search for the name availability with the California Secretary of State. You can complete and mail a Name Availability Inquiry Letter to the California Secretary of State at:

Complete an Application for Fictitious Business Name Statement. The statement will require the fictitious business name, the street address of the principal place of business, a mailing address (if different from the street address of the principal place of business), and names and addresses of the registered owners of the business.
