Things You'll Need

  • ½ cup green coffee beans
  • Hot air popcorn popper
  • Empty soup can
  • Can opener
  • Wooden spoon
  • Oven mitt
  • Two colanders
  • Opaque air-tight container

Instructions

      Pour ½ cup of green coffee beans into a hot-air popcorn popper. Set aside the popper's plastic chute.

      Remove the top and bottom ends of an empty soup can with a can opener. Pull the label off and place the can into the top of the popcorn popper to create a chimney.

      Plug in the machine and let it run for four to five minutes. Stir the green coffee beans for the first one to two minutes using a wooden spoon until the popcorn popper begins to move the beans itself.

      Unplug the popcorn popper when the beans have a slightly lighter color than the roast level desired, about four minutes for a light roast up to 6 ½ minutes for dark roasts.

      Take the soup can out of the top of the popcorn popper, holding it with an oven mitt to protect your hand from the hot metal.

      Dump the roasted coffee beans into a colander.

      Pour the coffee beans into a second colander and then back into the first to help separate the skins (chaff) from the beans and to cool the coffee beans quickly, stopping the roasting process.

      Transfer the completely cooled coffee beans to an opaque air-tight container and keep them away from light, heat and excessive moisture.
