How to Remove the Battery From Bikes

Yamaha bike Road Yamaha bike line of cruisers use varying methods to access their batteries: some use a locking seat-release mechanism, while others rely on a basic nut-and-bolt system. The Yamaha bike however, uses a removable side cover on the right side of the frame to house the battery. Removing the battery is fairly straightforward, but pay attention to the order that the battery cables are removed to prevent a nasty electrical shock.

Remove the three screws holding the S40's seat, using the appropriate Allen key. There is one Allen screw on each side underneath the seat and one at the back.

Remove the seat to expose the tool kit housing.

Remove the tool kit's front and back covers to expose the battery.

Pull out the battery.

Remove the negative cable from the battery using the Phillips screwdriver.

Remove the positive cable form the battery using the Phillips screwdriver.

 How to Remove the Battery from a Yamaha VMax Motorcycle

Find the levers concealed near the rear shock absorbers and push them forward to unlock the seat. Lift the seat upward until it locks into its uppermost position.

Use a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench to unscrew the bolts that secure the seat to its pivot. Pull the seat off of the motorcycle to reveal the battery.

Use a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench to unscrew the bolts that secure the ignition coils over the battery tray. Lift the ignition coils off of the battery tray and set them aside.

Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the black and red wire leads from the battery's terminal. Unscrew the black lead first, followed by the red lead.

Pull the battery strap's hook off of the battery tray's tab. Lift the battery out of the motorcycle.

 How to Remove the Battery From a Yamaha Midnight Star

Pull the right side cover beneath the rider's seat out of the frame's grommets to access the battery.

Pull the rubber battery strap off of the top of the battery box and lay it aside.

Pull the battery out of the battery box slightly. Unscrew the bolt from the battery's negative terminal, using a Philips screwdriver. Pull the negative cable away from the battery and frame.

Pull the battery out of the tray until you can access its positive terminal. Unscrew the bolt from the positive terminal, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the positive cable off of the battery.
