How to Convert BMP Images Into JPG

Save

If you want to share a bitmap—or BMP—file, converting the image to a JPG will make it easier to upload to photo-sharing and social-networking sites. Converting a BMP image into JPG does not require fancy photo-editing software—though you can certainly convert files that way. Most of the time, you can convert between these two common image formats using software pre-installed on your computer. Files saved with either the .jpg or .jpeg extensions will function in the same manner and open in the same programs.

Things You'll Need

  • Microsoft Paint (optional)
  • Open Microsoft Paint by clicking the Windows “Start” menu, navigating to the "Accessories" folder and clicking on "Paint." Most Windows-based computers come with Paint pre-installed. Click the “File” menu and select “Open.” Choose your BMP image and select “Save As” from the “File” menu. Choose “JPEG (.JPG, .JPEG, .JPE, .JFIF)” from the “Save as type” dropdown menu, then click the “Save” button.

  • Open your Web browser and navigate to coolutils.com/Online/Image-Converter to use the free, online image converter. Click the “Browse” button and select your BMP image. Make sure ”JPEG” is highlighted under “Set convert options.” Click the “Download Converted File” button.

  • Go to pictureresize.org/online-images-converter.html for an alternative free site to convert your BMP file to JPG. Click the “Browse…” button to select your BMP image and choose “JPEG – Joint Photographic Experts Group JFIF format” from the “Select other output format” dropdown box. Click the “Convert Now!” button. The site provides a link where you can view your image for 2 hours. Click on the provided link, right-click on your image and select “Save Image As…” to save the file to your computer.
