How to Choose a Plus Sized Bikini
The media traditionally depicts impossibly thin women frolicking on the beaches in bikinis. It rarely shows beautiful, confident plus sized women being proud of their bodies. The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance calls this size discrimination and aims to educate the world about the damage these body image standards foster. One way to promote size pride and body acceptance is to proudly wear a piece of clothing traditionally off-limits for plus-sized women: the bikini. In doing so, you'll not only be making a fashion statement, but you'll also be making a bold political one, too. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Consider your goals. Do you want a bikini that will flatter or are you simply looking for shock value? Choose a micro bikini if you're looking to make a bold statement. Micro bikinis offer very little coverage, but they also offer very little support. Keep this in mind as you shop.

2
Try on your bikini to test the leg openings and waistbands, according to Everything Bikini. Make sure the openings aren't cutting into your skin and that you have room to move. If these elements are too tight, they'll create friction as you walk and lead to raw, painful skin.

Look for a bra with good support if you have large breasts. Choose a top with underwire or side supports that give you the feel you want without digging into your sides, breasts or back. Choose wide straps that fit snugly without falling down or digging into your shoulders. Lift your arms up above your head to test that your top will stay in place during activities.

4
Purchase a tankini if you're not ready to bare your entire midriff. Tankinis are bikinis with a tank top-like upper piece that's worn separately from the bottom piece. Choose one with the amount of coverage or overlap that makes you feel comfortable.

5
Move around in your bikini to make sure it stays put. Bikinis that are too tight can pucker, roll down, ride up or come undone, no matter how good they look when you're just standing in a dressing room.
