Directions for a Yarn Dog

Kids love animals, making animal-theme crafts a popular choice of activity. Many children have dogs of their own or know someone who does, so create a craft inspired by these friendly pups. A yarn dog is simple to make and is a cute finished product for kids to show off and display in their homes.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap your yarn around the cardboard square at least 100 times. (Use only one color of yarn or combine with other colors while you wrap.)

    • 2

Snip the strand of yarn that attaches the wrapped yarn to the yarn ball. Tuck the snipped end under the wrapped yarn on the cardboard.

    • 3

Cut a 6-inch piece of yarn and slide that piece under the wrapped yarn. Tie the piece into a tight double knot.

    • 4

Turn the cardboard over to the opposite side. Cut all the way through the yarn on this side to free the yarn from the cardboard.

    • 5

Turn the yarn pompom sideways and smooth out the strands of yarn to make the pompom look tidy.

    • 6

Press the foam ball into a hard surface (a wall or table, for instance) to flatten the bottom. (This creates a stable, flat surface on the bottom so the dog won't fall over.)

    • 7

Stand the ball on its flat bottom and cover the top of the ball with glue.

    • 8

Place the yarn pompom onto the ball, carefully covering any exposed foam with yarn. Press the yarn into the glue, and allow the glue to dry for an hour.

    • 9

Cut out any shapes you need from your craft foam. Cut out 3-inch ovals for floppy ears or 1-inch triangles for upright ears. Cut out small and irregularly shaped spots for the dog's fur. Use a hole punch to cut out little foam spots for the dog's cheeks.

    • 10

Apply some glue to the tops of the foam feet, then place the dog's body onto the feet. Glue on the dog's eyes, ears, tail, spots and cheek spots (place three small spots on each cheek). Allow the glued-on parts to dry for one day.
