How to Amplify Wireless Signals

Wireless Internet connections are becoming much more popular as technology advances and high speed Internet availability spreads throughout the world. Previously available on school campuses and workplaces, almost any customer can add wireless Internet capabilities into their home. Sometimes, with less due to interference, weak connections and large homes, you may have trouble connecting to your wireless network. However, there are a few different ways to optimize the strength of your connection and even boost its efficiency throughout your home.

  • Place your wireless gateway on a high surface, such as a table or desk, instead of the floor or in a corner. Place it away from walls, monitors, desktop towers and other objects that may obstruct the signal. For smaller to medium-sized homes where you may not need wireless extenders or repeaters, consider placing your wireless modem or router in the center of your home to make sure the connection availability is as equal as possible.

  • Update your wireless device's firmware. Firmware updates may correct errors, increase efficiency or fix other problems with your device. These changes may increase the strength and reliability of your wireless connection.

  • Purchase wireless repeaters for your home. These repeaters take the signal from your modem or router and amplify the signal, giving it a greater range. Place these devices halfway between your computers and the modem, or place multiple repeaters equally throughout your home. (Unless your home is very large, you should not need more than one or two at most.)
