Transfer music from your computer to a cell phone using a USB cable. PCs often treat cell phones as an external hard drive and allow users to add compatible music files to subfolders on the phone. Add only music file types your phone supports. Most phones support MP3 files while others also accommodate WAV, WMA, OGG and FLAC files. MP3 files are among the most popular and are usually playable on most devices. They also take less memory on the phone, making them a more desirable choice than WAV files, which are among the largest file type.
Things You'll Need
- Cell phone
- Phone-compatible USB cable (often known as a micro-USB-to-USB cable)
- Computer with USB port
Turn on the cell phone and connect it to the computer with the USB cable. Use only cables compatible with the cell phone, as the USB ports in cell phones are usually smaller than computer USB ports.
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the letter drive containing the cell phone's contents. If the computer recognizes the phone automatically, you might see a dialog box appear in the window asking if you'd like to view the files. Click "OK" to open the folder.
Navigate to the files you'd like to transfer using a new Windows Explorer window.
Create a new folder for the music files in the cell phone. Some phones come with "My Music" folders built in or have designated areas for user-added data.
Drag and drop music files from the computer music folder to the cell phone music folder. Create subfolders for artists, albums and songs if desired. Wait for all files to transfer completely.
Disconnect the USB cable from the cell phone and the computer. If you see a green "Safely Remove Hardware" button in the utility tray at the bottom right corner of the screen, right-click it and select "Safely Remove Hardware." Confirm this operation and unplug the cable when prompted to do so.
Tips & Warnings
- Not all phones use this process for data transfer. Do not attempt this process for phones requiring special syncing or data transfer software.
