How to Make Stink Bait With Shad
The only thing that catfish love more than shad is stinky shad. The next time you are getting ready to fish for big cats, consider making a batch of catfish shad, stink bait dip. Although this may sound less than appetizing to a human, to a catfish this is a feast. Along with a few other simple ingredients, most anglers can easily make a batch of shad stink bait dip in a short amount of time.
Things You'll Need
- 18 to 20 shad
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- 1 tbsp. garlic powder
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- Blender
- Air tight plastic container or jar
- Catfish dip worms or bait sponges
Instructions

1
Place 18 to 20 small to medium sized shad in a blender. An old blender should ideally be used for mixing baits as the aromas can be quite strong.
-
2
Add 1 tbsp. of sugar and 1 tbsp. of garlic powder to the shad. Pulse the blender a few times to begin chopping and incorporating the ingredients. Make sure the lid is on the blender before pulsing.

3
Pour in 1/2 cup of cornmeal into the blender. Place the lid back on the blender and mix on a low setting. Pulse the blender periodically to help with the mixing process.
-
4
Transfer the shad dip mixture to a jar with a lid or an air tight plastic container. Cover tightly and allow to sit for a period of 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. Periodically shake the container or jar to incorporate the ingredients.
-
5
Take the entire container with you when fishing. The length of time the shad dip was allowed to set will produce a stink bait, as you will discover when removing the lid. Dip a catfish dip worm or sponge into the shad stink bait dip and fish as you typically would for catfish.
