How to Change the Oil for a '99 Honda Civic DX Hatchback

The 1999 Honda Civic DX hatchback is a small 2-door or 4-door coupe equipped with a four cylinder engine. The 1999 Honda Civic DX hatchback uses 10W40 engine oil. The oil pan is located on the bottom of the engine, and there is a metal plug on the bottom of the oil pan. That plug must be removed in order to drain the engine oil from the oil pan. The oil filter will be on the side of the oil pan and must be changed, as well. This is a basic job that should take only 20 minutes to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Ramp lift
  • Drain pan
  • Ratchet set

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the left front tire onto the ramp lift and set the parking brake. Place the drain pan under the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan. Remove the plug with the ratchet set and allow the oil to drain into the drain pan. Replace the plug to the bottom of the oil pan.

    • 2

Twist the oil filter off the bottom of the engine. Fill the new oil filter with oil and twist the new oil filter onto the bottom of the engine.

    • 3

Remove the drain pan from under the engine and back the Civic off the ramp lift. Open the hood and twist off the plastic cap from the engine (make sure the "OIL" is visible on the top of the cap).

    • 4

Insert the funnel into the engine where the cap was and pour 4 1/2 quarts of engine oil into the engine. Remove the funnel and replace the cap to the engine.
