How to Set Up 5.1 Home Surround Sound
One type of speaker system for home theaters is 5.1 surround sound. You can set up 5.1 surround sound for your home theater by first determining speaker distance and location. Placement of the speakers is one of the most important parts of installation for this system.

Select a viewing distance from the TV in the room, such as 12+ feet, for your seating position. Determine the distance by measuring from the location of your head to the television.

Set the left and right speakers so they are the same distance from the side of the television. Measure the distance from the speakers to the viewing distance you measured in Step 1. The distance should be the same for both speakers.

Place the center speaker so that is it centered under the television. Align the speaker so that is centered with your seating position.

Angle the left and right speakers so that they are pointing in a straight line toward your seating position.

Set the subwoofer, which is the .1 of the 5.1 home surround system, along a wall or next to the TV.

Place the left and right surround speakers on each side, near the rear, of your seating position. Point these speakers in a straight line toward your seating position.

Tips & Warnings
The seating position in the room is the focal point for the concentration of sound that is coming from the speakers.
Do not place the subwoofer in a corner or the bass will sound heavy and muddy.
