Cooking with an array of spices adds depth to the flavor of your food, making the crunchy exterior and tender meat of fried chicken ideal for absorbing seasonings. Dried, ground seasonings provide a simple way to add a different taste beyond salt and pepper each time you prepare fried chicken. Avoid the need for sauces or switch from sweet to savory or spicy flavor by changing the spice mixture added to the flour before dredging the chicken in it.

Step 1

Pour the flour into a mixing bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Step 2

Create a dry, ground seasoning mixture of your choosing. Add cayenne pepper for a spicy flavor. Add seasonings such as clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger for a sweet and savory flavor. Add spices including cumin, sage, basil and sage for an earthy, pungent taste.

Step 3

Add one part total seasonings per three parts flour. Whisk the flour and seasonings together.
