How to Store Wet Wood in a Basement
Chopped wood is an excellent source of fuel for your fireplace or wood stove. During the winter, it is a smart idea to store the wood inside your home, which allows it to dry out and keeps the wood out of the snow. You will also have easier access to it. If you have a cord of wood delivered and it rains the following day, you need to get the wood inside fast so it will start to dry. The first move is to take the wood into your basement. Lay down a plastic tarp on the floor of the basement in an uncluttered area.

Set up a metal shelf near the front of the tarp. Stack wood in single rows on the shelves.

Place the remaining wood behind the shelves. Stack two pieces about six inches apart, parallel to each other.

Stack two more pieces on top of the stack from step 3, perpendicular to them, forming a box shape, which allows air to get under the wood to dry it out.

Continue to stack the wood in this manner in several layers, one on top of the other.

Tips & Warnings
Set up a large fan and point it at the wood. Turn the fan on to dry the wood faster.
Use a room dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air. Many basements are moist to begin with, so this is a necessity in most homes.
