How to Decorate a Koozie

Koozies are a wonderful way to keep your canned or bottled drinks cold and many people have an abundance of them. Businesses, schools and sporting events like to print their logos on them and give them away as promotional gifts. Decorate a koozie by recycling an existing foam koozie and old blue jeans. This quick and easy project creates a sleeve that slides over the koozie and frayed denim provides a decorative touch. Make several for your next outdoor party.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference around your foam koozie and add an inch. Measure the height of your koozie.

    • 2

Cut a leg from one pair of old blue jeans. Cut the leg open at the seam and lay flat for your fabric. Avoiding the jean seams, cut one piece of jean fabric, using your koozie measurements. This is the wrap for your koozie.

    • 3

Cut three strips of jean fabric 1-inch wide by the circumference measurement. These are the trim pieces for your koozie.

    • 4

Lay the wrap fabric flat on your sewing table, with the right side up. Place one trim strip on top of the wrap, matching one long edge of the trim with one long edge of the wrap. Pin to hold. Top stitch down the long center of the trim to attach. Place another trim strip on the other long side of the wrap and repeat. Center and pin the remaining trim strip down the center of the wrap and sew.

    • 5

Fold the wrap in half with the right sides together and the short edges matching. Pin the short edges together. Sew the pinned edge using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. You now have a tube.

    • 6

Turn the tube right side out. Clip slits 1/4-inch wide from the raw edges of the tube to the top stitch line of the trim strips on the top and bottom of the wrap. Cut through the trim and the wrap, but do not cut through the stitch line. Cut slits 1/4-inch wide, to the stitch line, on the other side of each trim strip. Cut slits 1/4-inch wide on each side of the middle trim strip.

    • 7

Wash and dry the koozie wrap in a washer and dryer to fray the slits. Slide the decorated wrap over your foam koozie to finish.
