Determine the position of the grab bar. Although any grab bar is helpful for someone who is disabled, a horizontal position on the grab bar is best for those who need help standing upright. A slanted grab bar is best for those who sit in the shower; the diagonal position allows them to easily stand. A vertically positioned grab bar works for those who only need help getting in and out of the shower. The position of the grab bar is also determined by the stud positioning in the wall.

Locate the studs in the wall. A tiled shower that does not extend to the ceiling makes it easy to find the studs. Simply use a stud finder above the tile of the shower to find the studs. Shower with tile extending to the ceiling requires a bit more guesswork. In some cases you can locate the studs from the opposite side of the wall in another room. Space studs approximately 16 inches apart. If you can find one stud, measure and mark every 16 inches from that point.

Drill holes for the mounting flange. Hold the grab bar in place. Use a pencil or marker to mark the holes on each end of the grab bar. Once the holes are marked, remove the grab bar, and use a glass and tile bit to drill the holes. Go slowly so you do not break the tile while you are drilling. You should hit the stud in at least two of the holes you drill. Screw the 12-inch stainless steel screws into place.

Test the grab bar to make sure it is sturdy.

    • 5

Apply a bead of caulk around the edges of the grab bar where the bar meets the tile.
