How to Make a Router Work Without the Original Software

One of the first things to get lost for a new piece of computer equipment is the driver disc. The manual is a close second. This may not be a problem for you if your network and computer settings don't change. For a router, this may become an issue if you move to another location or change Internet providers. Some router manufacturers offer downloads of their setup software, others don't. Either way, you need an Internet connection to reach the website. Luckily, set-up software isn't necessary to configure a router.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your computer to the router with an RJ-45 patch cable. The cable should be plugged into one of the ports marked LAN or Ethernet. The WAN or Internet port should only be used for connection to your Internet provider.

    • 2

      Start your browser.

    • 3

Type your router's user interface address into your browser's address bar. This will open a browser-friendly setup screen. Most routers have a default address of 192.168.1.1. Other addresses commonly used are: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.2.1.

    • 4

Enter your user name and password at the prompts.

    • 5

Make the necessary changes in the router's graphical user interface.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't remember your user name and password, you can restore your router's factory default settings by pressing and holding the reset button on your router for five seconds. The router needs to be powered on during this process.

  • Default user name and password can be found in your documentation. If you have misplaced the documentation for your router, look on the manufacturer's website.

  • For a wireless router, change the SSID, user name and password during your initial setup. Leaving these at the factory default settings makes cracking your system easy for even novice hackers.

  • Router manufacturer's websites can be found on the right sidebar in the Resources link.
