How to Attach a Moly Rivet

Moly rivets are a standard blind rivet made with the silvery metal molybdenum added to increase the strength and temperature resistance of the rivet. When installing a moly rivet, you will find that the rivet is harder to pull than a standard steel rivet and if you are installing a lot of moly rivets, you may need to use an electric rivet gun and drill a hole slightly larger than the recommended hole size to ease the installation process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Select a drill bit from the drill bit set that is 1/64-inch larger than the diameter of the moly rivet. For example, if you are installing a 1/8-inch moly rivet, you need a 9/64-inch drill bit.

    • 2

Secure the drill bit in the chuck of the 1/2-inch drill motor and put on your safety glasses.

    • 3

Drill a hole in the metal at the location you need to install the moly rivet. Do not ream the hole with the drill bit, as this will reduce the pull-out strength of the installed rivet.

    • 4

Slide the moly rivet into the electric rivet gun, insert the end of the moly rivet into the drilled hole until the head of the rivet rests firmly against the surface of the metal and pull the trigger of the rivet gun until the rivet pops free of the rivet gun.

    • 5

Release the trigger of the electric rivet gun to eject the pin from the moly rivet.
