How to Take Out Ketchup Stains

A ketchup stain can be the kiss of death for your favorite sweater or tablecloth. Without the proper stain treatment, that stain can become a permanent part of that item. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to get that ketchup stain out for good, and you don't need any fancy stain sticks or treatments to do it.

Things You'll Need

• Vinegar
• Sponge
• Laundry detergent
• Clear, ammonia-based glass cleaner
• Clean white rag

Instructions

1. Dip a clean sponge in undiluted vinegar. Use the sponge to dab the vinegar onto the ketchup stain.

2. Wash the ketchup-stained item with laundry detergent and two cups of vinegar. Do this right away, before the vinegar you sponged on has a chance to dry. Do not dry the items until you check and confirm that the ketchup stains are gone.

3. Spray a clear, ammonia-based glass cleaner onto any ketchup stains that are still visible after you launder the item. Leave the glass cleaner on the stain for about 15 minutes.

4. Blot the glass cleaner from the ketchup stain with a clean white rag.

5. Rinse the stained area with cool water. Wash the item again with laundry detergent and two cups of vinegar.

Tips & Warnings

• Test glass cleaner on a hidden part of your item before treating a stain. This will prevent potential fading of the item.

• Do not use glass cleaner on fabrics that contain silk or wool.
