How to Troubleshoot an iPod Click Wheel

The click wheel on the front of Apple's iPod lets you access the portable media player's features, including any videos, music and photos you've uploaded onto the device. Occasional problems may arise while you're using the click wheel that could limit access. Troubleshoot to resolve any potential problems and get back to using all of your iPod's features.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that the iPod's hold switch, located on the top edge of the device, isn't engaged. An engaged switch locks the device's buttons and makes the click wheel unresponsive. Slide the switch to the left, opposite the side that's labeled "Hold."

    • 2

Charge the iPod if it won't turn on when you press its click wheel. Connect the device to your computer or its charging dock with its included USB cable. Disconnect when the battery icon on the device is full. It takes four hours to fully charge an iPod's battery, according to Apple.

    • 3

Wipe the click wheel with a soft, dry cloth to remove any built-up debris or dust. Such buildup may cause the click wheel to behave erratically when you touch it.

    • 4

Reset the iPod if the iPod is frozen and doesn't respond to the click wheel. Push the hold switch on and off, then simultaneously push both the click wheel's center button and its top menu button for 10 seconds or until the iPod's screen displays the Apple logo.

Call Apple's iPod support line toll-free at 800-275-2273 if the click wheel still doesn't function properly. The problem may be a hardware issue that requires servicing.
