How to List on eBay Without Getting a Copyright Warning

Listing items on eBay can be a great way to make some extra cash and to get rid of clutter in your home by reselling unwanted items. Some have even based entire businesses on eBay, selling goods or wares that they make or buy and establishing eBay storefronts. If you are interested in selling on eBay, you need to make sure you follow the rules so you don't receive a copyright warning and potentially have your listing ended.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid listing material that infringes on copyright law. While you can resell original copies of copyrighted books, DVDs or software, you cannot sell any items that would violate the copyright laws of that item. So, for example, you can sell an original copy of the Star Wars DVD, but you cannot sell a copy of the movie that you taped off of your VCR nor can you sell a copy of the DVD you made. The same is true for software and other copyrighted items. You can sell original software disks but not copies you burned at home.

Write an original listing. Do not simply find someone else's listing and description of the item and copy it into your own. Some of these listings--especially if written by those who run eBay businesses or stores--may be copyrighted and as such the original owner of the listing may complain if you copy their words verbatim. Simply write your own description of the item or use eBay's description that fills in when you enter the ISBN number if it is a book, DVD or some other item that has a standard description.

Take your own picture. If you borrow a picture from someone else's listing or from a manufacturer's website, you may be violating copyrighted laws since the image may be copyrighted. EBay can send you a copyright warning if you do this and the company may complain. The best bet is to take a picture of the actual item you are selling, but if you absolutely cannot do this, you can find creative commons or royalty-free images on the Internet.
