Basic Crochet Stich Instructions for a Left Handed Person

Traditional crochet patterns assume that the crocheter is working right-handed. However, it is possible to crochet as a left-handed person; the only real difference is that you will follow most patterns backward. In other words, you will read them from the left side of a row to the right or from the end of a row to the beginning. Before you can do that, however, you need to learn basic crochet stitches.

Begin with a chain stitch. The chain stitch is the beginning of almost any crochet project; you will often find a pattern that tells you to make a foundation chain because a length of chain stitches becomes the foundation for the rest of the project. Hold the crochet hook in your left hand like a magic wand, and make a slipknot to attach the yarn to the hook. Hold the yarn with your right hand and yarn over; this means you will carry the yarn up and over the crochet hook from the back to the front. Draw up a loop; this means you will catch the yarn with the hook and pull a loop of yarn through the loop on your hook. Now you have made one chain stitch. Repeat this until you have 10 chain stitches, just for practice.

Make a single crochet stitch. This is the basic stitch in the crochet dictionary. To do this, insert your hook in the second needle from the hook; yarn over and draw up a loop, then yarn over and draw the yarn through both loops on your hook. Now you have made one single crochet. Work a single crochet stitch in each of the remaining chain stitches you made in step one. Work from left to right down the chain.

Make three chain stitches. This is your turning chain; you will use it to move from one row to the next in your crochet projects. Turn your piece of crocheted fabric so you can again work from left to right down a new row. Your chain-three stitch counts as one double crochet.

Make more double crochet stitches. To do this, yarn over before inserting the hook into the next stitch. You are going to skip the first single crochet because your turning chain takes up that space. So yarn over and insert the hook into the second single crochet in the row, then yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and draw through two loops on the hook, then yarn over again and draw through the remaining loops on the hook. You have made one double crochet stitch. Repeat this down the rest of the row, working from left to right.

Make a slip stitch to finish off your work. To do this, cut your working yarn, leaving a four-inch tail. Yarn over and draw the yarn through the loop on the hook, pulling the tail all the way through. Pull tightly to secure it.
