How to Wear a Kilt in Scotland
The kilt has long been a part of Scottish tradition, but the rules for dress can be tricky to first-timers. Historically, the plaid pattern of the kilt came from the clan's tartan. In modern times, wool kilts mostly are worn at weddings, military occasions, and cultural events. Kilts traditionally are worn only by men. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place the kilt just above your belly button, with the pleats in the back. Wrap the under apron from right to left, and pass the strap into the hole, fastening it to the left buckle.
-
2
Move the top apron from left to right, and fasten with the strap and buckle. Adjust the two layers so that they are aligned at the top.

Top your kilt with the appropriate shirt or jacket, depending on the time of day and occasion. For an informal day event, you can put on a Jacobite shirt. A more formal day event calls for a tweed jacket, otherwise called an Argyle outfit. If you are attending a wedding or other formal event, you should choose a Prince Charles jacket, coupled with a dinner shirt and bow tie.

Slip into your kilt hose, and fold down the top so that 3 to 4 inches of your knee and leg are showing between the top of the hose and the hem of the kilt. Choose hose in any color other than white, unless you are a piper. For more formal occasions, select a color that matches your kilt colors. Put on a pair of dress shoes.

Add accessories. A single pin or badge is tasteful if worn on the left lapel. If you are wearing a Prince Charles jacket for a formal event, you can put on any military decorations you may have. If it's after 5 p.m., you can accessorize with silver buckles or sporrans with silver cantles.
