How to Read an SD Card When Inserted in a Slot

A secure digital, or SD, card is a small storage device that can be transferred back and forth between cameras, phones and computers. They're usually capable of storing a moderate amount of information and are commonly used when sharing pictures, videos or other files. SD slots are openings on electronic devices which allow the information on an SD card to be viewed.

      Insert your SD card, with the metal side facing down, into your computer or adapter. Make sure you're using the proper slot, as there are several popular sizes of memory cards, including xD, micro SD, USB and more.

      Wait a moment for your device to recognize the SD card, then click the "Start" button located at the bottom-left corner of your screen. Your computer may also send you an alert that says "New Hardware Detected."

      Open "My Computer" from the Start Menu.

      Double-click the icon that corresponds with your memory card. Usually, the brand name of the SD card will be located directly beneath the icon itself.

      Double-click the files you find in your SD drive folder to browse through your pictures, videos and other information located on your SD card.

  • Make sure when you insert the SD card that you hear and feel a click. This lets you know that it has been properly inserted.
