How to Make a Tomos Moped Go Faster
The Tomos line of mopeds are known for their reliability, durability and uniqueness. Although this company produces great 50cc mopeds, they lack bigger engine models. If you are a Tomos lover, this shortcoming can become an issue. However, if you do own a Tomos moped and you wish to make it run faster, a few adjustments to the engine and carburetor will do the trick. With $100 and a few hours of free time, you can make your 30 mph moped turn into a 40 or 50 mph bike.

1
Replace the stock carburetor with a newer, bigger one. For a Tomos moped, you will want a 70cc carburetor upgrade. If you a carburetor that's too big, you will find that your moped can't handle the higher speeds and will literally begin to fall apart as you go. The 70cc carburetors are available online for about $60 at Tomosusa.com, TreatlandTV.com or 1977mopeds.com.

Tune your bike by cleaning the air intake, washing out the muffler, replacing the spark plug, inflating the tires, checking the engine belt, cleaning the carburetor and changing the oil. A simple tuning can increase the moped's top speed by five miles per hour.

Purchase a "Big Bore" kit, which includes a bigger carburetor, a larger piston head and new engine gaskets. These few upgrades will get you at least a 15 mph increase in top speed. Be prepared to shell out some cash, however: These kits can cost anywhere from $400 to $1000.

4
Re-jet your Tomos moped by purchasing larger gas jets for your carburetor model. This upgrade increases the amount of gas sent to the engine, resulting in more horsepower, top speed and acceleration. These are available online or through your local auto parts store.

5
Turn the idle-screw inside your carburetor all the way in a clockwise direction. The idle screw is the one screw that has a spring on its threads--it will be sticking out of the carburetor. After screwing it all the way in, turn it out 1 1/2 turns. This precise amount of turning will result in good engine power, while still maintaining a similar gas mileage and efficiency.

Tips & Warnings
If your Tomos moped is going less than 30 mph at top speed, it needs to be tuned. Do a thorough cleaning and tuning of your moped--this should bring it up to speed again.
