Configure the volume settings. Locate the volume control on your chosen music software. Ensure that it is turned up to a reasonable level, around 3/4 of the volume slider. Locate the volume settings for your operating system and make sure they are turned up and not on mute. Make sure your speakers are turned on with a good volume level, if they have volume control.

Ensure that your hardware is working properly. Plug a different set of speakers into the sound card to see if a new set gets a better volume level.

Troubleshot your sound hardware. Shut down and unplug your computer. On the side of the case that holds your computer parts, an access hatch opens to allow the user to repair and install new hardware. The access hatch is usually secured with Phillips screws or a latch that must be opened to remove the hatch cover.

Locate the sound card, which often sits in a slot on the motherboard. The motherboard is usually the largest chip in a computer that holds the main processor. Look for the audio jacks on the outside of your computer case and observe to which card they attach. Sometimes the audio card is part of the motherboard. Make sure that all cables leading from the motherboard to the sound card are securely attached and that the sound card is firmly seated in its slot.

5
Close the hatch, plug the computer back in and power it on. Test the sound levels again to see if they have improved.

6
Purchase and install a USB external sound card. Plug the device into an open USB port on your computer and install the driver as indicated by the manufacturer. Test the sound coming from the external sound card. If the sound levels are good, your original sound card may need to be replaced.

Tips & Warnings
Speakers have a threshold of sound that they can produce before they blow out and sound fuzzy with buzzing bass. Turning speakers up beyond their comfort zone can distort the sound. If you want sound to be extremely loud, you will need a high-performance set of computer speakers complete with a subwoofer and their own volume controls.
