How to Become a Barber in Texas


Barbers cut, trim, style and shampoo hair, catering to mostly male clientele. Facial shaving and scalp treatments are other services they may offer. To become a barber in Texas, applicants must be at least 16 years old and have completed 1,500 hours of training in a barber school licensed by Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). The 1,500 hours consists of 800 hours of practical experience and 700 hours of theory.

  • Enroll in barber school to complete necessary training and education. There are 39 privately owned schools in Texas (in 2010) licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.   • Download and print the application for Texas Class A Barber License by Examination (see Resources). Enclose your fee and school transcripts to show proof that you have completed the necessary training. Mail the application to the address listed on the top of the form. Eligible students will receive a postcard from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) containing instructions for scheduling an appointment to take the licensing examination.

  • Register for the written portion of the examination. Applicants can register by phone, fax, Internet or mail. You need a Visa or Master card to register by fax, Internet or by phone. To register by phone, call 800-733-9267 to use the automated system, which is available 24 hours a day. Complete the examination registration form prior to making the call, and follow the system prompts. Call PSI to schedule your examination at 800-733-9267. To register online, log on to and fill out the registration form online. Once registration is complete, you will be given available examination dates and locations for scheduling your examination. Select your desired examination date and location. To register by fax, complete the examination registration form with payment information and fax it to 702-932-2666. Allow four business to process your registration before calling PSI to schedule your examination. To register by mail, send the completed registration form to the address listed on the form. Applicants can send a cashiers check, money order or pay with a Visa or Master Card. Allow seven business days to process your application before calling PSI to schedule your examination.

    Scores are given immediately following the completion of the written portion with a pass or fail notification. Applicants must score 12 out of 20 points to pass the written portion of the examination (70%). Those who fail the written portion of the exam and would like to take it again can fill out a registration form at the examination site to submit to PSI.

  • Register for the practical portion of the examination. Students must pass the written portion of the examination to be eligible for the practical portion. A passing score is 70% for the practical examination. That is 30 out of 42 points.

    TDLR sends a letter to each student that passes the examination. This letter contains their passing scores and a form to fill out to receive the actual barber license. Mail the completed form and the appropriate fee to TDLR.
