The Windows Vista operating system comes with a utility called the Backup and Restore center. This utility allows you to create a complete backup of your computer that can be used to recover your computer if you have to reformat your hard drive. After you've performed a clean installation of Vista, you'll need to restore the files that you've previously backed up. To do this, you can use the system recovery manager.

      Turn on your computer and connect the external hard drive that contains a backup of your computer's files.

      Insert the Windows Vista installation CD and restart your computer. Press any key when presented with the message "Press any key to boot from CD."

      Select your language preferences and click "Next."

      Click the "Repair your computer" link to open the system recovery manager. Select the operating system you want to recover and click "Next."

      Click "Windows Complete PC Restore" from the list of options. This option allows you to recover all of the files, programs and settings you backed up.

      Select the backup file you want to restore and click "Next."

      Click the check box that says "I confirm that I want to erase all existing data and restore the back up." Click "OK" to start the system recovery.

      Click "Restart Now" after the system is recovered. You have now successfully used the recovery manager in Vista.
