How to Treat Fur in Cats for Ringworm

Ringworm is a fungal infection that can easily spread from one animal to another, as well as to humans. The fungus often affects cats. Ringworm appears as a reddish scaly ring with a clear center. The ringworm is itchy and will eventually cause the cat's fur to fall out around the infection. If it isn't treated, it could spread throughout the cat's body.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your cat to the veterinarian. Have your pet examined for ringworm. Ask your veterinarian about a ringworm vaccination. There is a vaccination that requires three separate shots, making you return two times within weeks. This could be stressful for your pet. Another alternative would be to ask your veterinarian about a medication that can be given with food, such as Griseofulvin. This medication would need to be given until it is used up, even if it appears that the ringworm has cleared up.

Bathe your cat with an antifungal shampoo. Treating the fur of your cat for ringworm will require washing the fur down to the skin of your pet. You can also use a sulfur dip that helps get rid of ringworm. Use every four days for at least one month.

Apply a topical treatment such as an ointment or antifungal rinse. An ointment would need to be prescribed by your veterinarian. You would apply it daily to your cat's skin. An antifungal rinse can be purchased at a pet store. The rinse needs to be left on your cat's body to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a cat that has long hair you may want to shave the cat, especially around the infected area. This will help you treat the ringworm easier and make sure it doesn't spread.
