How to Connect to Xbox Live With a 3G Phone

Save

Connecting to Xbox Live with a 3G phone is possible if the cell phone you are using has an unlimited data plan and an Internet-sharing application on it. Windows Mobile 3G phones are the easiest to connect to the Xbox, as they have an application called Internet Sharing installed on them before they are shipped. In order to connect a 3G phone to Xbox 360 for Xbox Live access, the phone must be connected to a PC that transmits the phone's 3G connection to the game system via an ad hoc wireless network.

Things You'll Need

  • Xbox 360 with Wi-Fi adapter
  • 3G phone
  • Data plan
  • PC with Windows and a Wi-Fi card
  • Connect the phone to your computer. The 3G phone must be connected to your computer via USB. The first time you connect the phone to the computer, it may take a few seconds for drivers to install.

  • Share the Internet connection. Open your Control Panel and click on Network and Sharing to launch a list of your network connection settings. Open your list of network devices, and right-click on the 3G phone's network connection. This connection may be called 3G, Mobile or something similar, depending on the setup of your phone. After you right-click, select Properties and then Sharing. Check the box that allows other users to connect via the computer's Internet connection. Click OK and close the Control Panel.

• Create an ad hoc network. Open the Control Panel, and again launch the Network and Sharing options. Open the list of wireless networks, and click on Add to create a new network. When prompted, select the option to start an ad hoc wireless network.

  • Set your SSID and network key. In order to finalize your ad hoc network setup, you must create an SSID for the network. The SSID is the name of your wireless network. You do not need to create a network key, but if you want to secure your ad hoc connection, note that Windows ad hoc networking supports WEP and WAP security. Click Next to finalize the ad hoc network.

  • Turn on the Xbox 360. Launch the Xbox 360, but do not insert a disc. If your Xbox is already on, return to the Xbox Dashboard by pressing the Xbox logo button on your controller. Launch the network settings, and search for wireless networks. When prompted, select the SSID you created in Step 4. If you used WEP or WAP encryption, type in the network key using your Xbox 360 controller.

  • Verify the network connection. Once you input the network information, connect to Xbox Live to verify that the 3G phone Internet sharing connection is working properly.
