How to Delete Internet History Form Your Hard Drive

Some computer users do not want people to be able to see exactly what they have been doing online. Unfortunately for them, most Internet browsers keep a detailed history, down to the minute, of the websites that have been visited. Not only that, browsers create cookies--little bits of data from each website that help it load faster--and keep downloads as temporary files. If you want to hide your Internet footprints, you'll need to delete your history, cookies and temporary Internet files. It is easy to to all of these things.

Instructions

    • 1

In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" at the top of the browser window, and choose "Internet Options."

    • 2

Click on the "General" tab and look under Browsing History for the option to delete temporary files, history, cookies, saved passwords and web form information.

    • 3

Click "Delete" to erase these records from the browser. Note that you can check the box for "Delete browsing history on exit" to prevent Internet Explorer from keeping any history at all.

    • 4

Complete the history deletion process by emptying the Recycle Bin on your desktop. Once you have done that, all traces of your browsing history will be gone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Other web browsers, such as Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome also have very similar ways to delete browser history.

  • If you have a Google account and are logged on, Google also keeps a record of your browsing history online. It is not on your personal computer and cannot be retrieved unless you--or someone--logs into your Google account views your settings.
