Connect your HDTV to a surround sound stereo.

High-definition television (HDTV) sets provide high-quality video and audio output. You can get the best out of your HDTV’s audio output by connecting it to a surround sound speaker system. There are three standard ways to connect the HDTV to a surround sound system’s amplifier: HDMI, digital coaxial and RCA connections. HDMI and digital coaxial cables transport a full digital audio signal and provide better quality than RCA.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your HDTV’s audio output ports. Determine which of the output ports are compatible with your surround sound system amplifier’s audio input ports. Look for HDMI, digital coaxial and RCA ports, in that order. These ports are labeled accordingly, with the exception of the digital coaxial, which may be listed as “Digital In/Out” or “Optical In/Out” on either device.

    • 2

Insert one end of the HDMI, digital coaxial or RCA cable into the HDTV’s audio output port. RCA cables are two-part and color-coded on each end. Connect the plugs into their corresponding ports.

    • 3

Insert the other end of the HDMI, digital coaxial or RCA cable into the surround sound system amplifier’s corresponding audio input port.
