Fun costumes for girls of any age.

Halloween provides girls with an opportunity to show an unexpected side of themselves, or explore a new identity. Dressing up like a dancer can help a young girl perceive herself as graceful, while a gypsy costume lets her exhibit a more theatrical personality. A few yards of fabric and some costume jewelry can create a costume that allows a young girl to blossom.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear a ballerina's costume. Measure the girl's waist and cut 1 inch elastic to fit to create the tutu. Sew the ends of the elastic together so that it forms a circle that fits snugly on her waist. Buy four yards of white tulle, and cut all of it into strips four inches wide. Vary the length of the tulle, some can be 2 feet long, others 18 inches. Tie one end of each strip of tulle to elastic to create a fluffy tutu.

Wear a pink leotard, tights and the tutu. Wear ballet flats on the feet. Pull hair tightly back in a neat bun.

Dress as Dorothy after the tornado. Put on an old blue and white checked dress with a white blouse underneath it. Smear dirt on the blouse, and put rips in the dress. Mix 1/2 cup ketchup and 1/2 cup white corn syrup to create blood. Smear it on the dress, and brush some on her legs. Use black eye shadow to create a black eye. Add twigs and pieces of straw to the hair.

Give her a basket with a small stuffed black dog in it to carry on her arm.

Wear a bubble bath costume. Put her in a white shirt and white pants. Blow up 30 or more white balloons and use double sided tape to stick on the shirt and pants. Add a shower cap to the head, and have her hold a bottle of bubble bath or a rubber duck.

Predict her future in a gypsy costume by dressing her in a floor-length skirt and an off-the-shoulder top. Add lots of gold jewelry, including layers of necklaces and an armload of bracelets. Fold a patterned scarf into a triangle. Put the long side of the triangle around her forehead, and drape it over her head. Tie the two ends in the back to hold in place.

Have her wear big hoop earrings and carry a tambourine.

Draw a crown shape on white poster board to make a beauty queen costume. Cover it with gold glitter. Cut out the crown shape and fold it into a circle. Staple it in place. Measure the length from her right shoulder across to her left hip. Double the length and add 3 inches. Cut a piece of 2-inch-wide white ribbon to that measurement. Write "Beauty Queen" in white glue on half the length of the ribbon. Sprinkle gold glitter over the white glue. Allow to dry.

Dress her in a pretty dress, then drape the ribbon like a sash over her right shoulder and across to her left hip, making sure her title is front and center. Staple the ribbon together at her hip to hold in place. Put on the crown, have her wear lipstick and rouge, and she's a winning beauty.
