How to Negotiate Credit Card Debt with Collection Agencies

Most of Americans have to deal with credit card debt and collection agencies at least once in their life. And a majority of Americans will have to deal with their current burden of credit card debt and collection agencies for several years before being able to pay it off. That is, if they don't try to negotiate with the collection agencies. Luckily, it's easy to negotiate with collection agencies to bring down your credit card debt.

Instructions

Figure out a plan. It's important to figure out what you can offer to the collection agencies before talking to them directly. Always remember that collection agencies want to deal with you, about as much as you want to deal with them.

    • 2

Make sure your offer is realistic. Many collection agencies will agree to stop future penalties and fees if you pay off the debt, or increase your monthly payments.

    • 3

Don't start with your real offer. Instead, try to ask for a better deal. Often times they will try to reduce your offer, so you want to start off with more. A good example would be to ask for them to wipe away all your past fees and penalties. Even though this is rather unrealistic, sometimes you can even get them to agree to this or to wipe away half of your past penalties and fees.
