How to Correct Windows Firewall Settings to Use CDDB

The Windows Firewall is installed by default on all versions of the Windows operating system after 2001's Windows XP. It is a type of network monitor that keeps track of connections both leaving and coming into your computer. Certain connections that are deemed malicious and dangerous will be blocked automatically, even if they aren't necessarily so bad. If you want to use the CDDB (compact disc data base) on your computer, you'll have to add an exception to the Windows Firewall).

Instructions

    • 1

      Click "Start."

    • 2

      Click "Control Panel."

    • 3

      Open "Windows Firewall."

    • 4

Click on the "Exceptions" tab if you're using the Windows Firewall in Windows XP. If you're using the firewall in Windows Vista or Windows 7, click on the link that reads "Allow a program through the Windows Firewall" on the left side of the screen.

Under the "Add an Exception" box, type "http://www.gracenote.com" and then click "OK." Gracenote.com is the new home of the CDDB. Adding this URL to the "Exceptions" page will allow certain programs like Windows Media Player to connect to the CDDB and download appropriate song and artist information to your computer.
