How to Put Tire Chains on a Lawn Tractor

Put tire chains on your lawn tractor before bad weather begins.

Winterize your lawn tractor before the bad weather begins. Installing tire chains provides your tractor’s tires with the necessary traction needed to continue using it despite slippery conditions. Tire chains also prevent you from getting stuck in the snow.

Things You'll Need

• Tire chains
• Optional tire tensioner
• Bungee cords

Instructions

1. Untangle the chains.

2. Lay the chains flat on the ground.

3. Pick up the first set of tire chains and drape them over the tire. Make sure the hooks on the cross chains are facing away from the tire. The fasteners should also be facing out.

4. Position the first set of cross chains under the tire and tuck it between the tire and the ground.

5. Drive slowly until the fasteners on the chains are axle high.

6. Insert the inside fastener through a chain link and hook it in.

7. Insert and hook the outside fastener.

Tips & Warnings

• Be sure the chains are taut against the tire. You can purchase a tensioner or use bungee cords to tighten the chains.
