How to Make Boxes From Cards

Instead of storing or throwing away old greeting cards, they can be used to make unique boxes.

During holidays such as Christmas or Valentine's Day, you may receive a number of greeting cards from family, friends and neighbors. Instead of just throwing the cards away or putting them away in a box, you can make small gift boxes out of your cards. As a box lid, the designs or artwork from the greeting cards can still be enjoyed for many years to come. You can use these boxes in many ways including gift boxes for small presents or storing jewelry and loose change.

Instructions

Making the Box

1. Cut a card in half, along the folded edge. You will now have two cards of equal size.

2. Decide which card will make the bottom of the box. Measure and trim ? inch off one long side and one short side of the card.

3. Lay the card that will make the box top face down on a flat surface. With the pencil, draw four lines that are ½ inch from the edge of the card.

4. Cut along the lines of the long sides of the card, from the edge of the card right up to where the lines intersect with the lines that run along the short sides of the card. This cut will be exactly ½ inch in length. You will form four tabs to make the lid.

5. Fold the card along the pencil lines on the long sides of the card first, then on the short sides. Tuck the corner flaps behind the short sides of the card. Use the glue to hold the flaps to the short sides of the card and allow to dry.

6. Measure the same lines and make the same cuts on the other card to make the bottom of the box. Since you trimmed some of the card earlier, it will be smaller and will fit snugly inside the lid.
