Having an avatar inside a 3D virtual world allows you to socialize with other users, explore the virtual world and participate in virtual activities. Most 3D virtual worlds have a basic avatar they have created that you can modify to your liking. Although you are not actually creating the avatar, you are creating the look of your avatar. With just a small amount of time, you will be able to represent yourself online as an avatar in a 3D virtual world. Second Life is a 3D virtual world that offers realistic avatars that you can create with a unique look and style.

Create a Second Life account at www.secondlife.com. You will be given a basic avatar that you can update and style with cloths, jewelry, skin and a shape. To buy items for your avatar you will need lindens, which is Second Life currency. You can attach a credit card or a PayPal account to your Second Life account and buy lindens for your avatar. $1.00 U.S. equals L$259 Second Life lindens.

Choose a new skin and shape for your avatar. Browse for a new shape and skin at the official shopping market for Second Life called Xstreet. Using the search box, type in the word "Shapes" or "Skins" to view the different vendors inside Second Life that sell skins and shapes. When you find one or two vendors that you like, click on the URL, and it will bring up a landmark inside of Second Life. Click on the landmark, and you will be teleported to the vendor's store. Before you buy a shape or skin, try on a demo first to see how the shape and skin looks on your avatar.

Choose an eye color for your avatar. Browse for eyes at the Second Life shopping market Xstreet. There are a multitude of eye colors and designs to choose from, including realistic human eyes and animal eyes.

Choose a new hair style for your avatar. You can get ideas and tips on the top hair designers in Second Life from an online fashion magazine for Second Life called Second Style. Browse for hair styles online at Xstreet. Buy demos first and try them on to see how the hair looks on your avatar. Choose a few different demo hair styles to pick from; demos are typically free or cost one linden dollar.

Customize your avatar with clothes, shoes and accessories. You can find a list of clothing stores online at the Second Life marketplace Xstreet, Second Style magazine and fashion groups inside of Second Life. Log into your Second Life account, and use the search box located on the bottom of the screen to search for fashion groups to join.
