Crochet Beaded Fringe Shawl Instructions
Crocheted shawls are versatile accessories. Make one out of lacy yarn in an open stitch pattern and wear it with formal or evening wear. Make one using worsted weight yarn in a closed stitch pattern and it will keep you warm on chilly nights at home. Add beaded fringe to any type of crocheted shawl to give it a unique, stylish complement.

1
Begin with a chain that is as long as you want your shawl to be. A standard size for a shawl is approximately 60 inches long. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in every chain across.
-
2
Chain three and turn. Double crochet in the second single crochet and in every single crochet across the row. Chain one and turn. Single crochet in every double crochet across the row. Repeat this pattern until the desired width of your shawl has been reached, ending with a single crochet row.

3
Fasten off your shawl by making a slip stitch, then cutting your working yarn and making another tight slip stitch to secure it.
-
4
Cut lengths of yarn that are eight inches long. You will need two of these fringe pieces for every inch of width of your shawl on each side. So for instance, if your shawl is 20 inches wide then you will need 40 fringe pieces on each side for a total of 80 fringe pieces.

Thread one fringe length of yarn onto a needle; use a large eye blunt needle for thick yarn and a beading needle or embroidery needle for thin yarn. Thread two beads onto the needle and yarn. The beads you choose must be large enough to accommodate your yarn and needle in this process. Take the yarn off the needle, carefully keeping the beads on the yarn. Tie a knot in each end of the yarn and slide the beads down so that each one rests against a knot. Repeat this step for every length of fringe you have created.
-
6
Bend a length of fringe in half so that you have a loop in the middle with the beads and knotted ends hanging down. Use your crochet hook to pull this loop through the short edge of your shawl, from front to back. Pull the knotted and beaded ends through the loop to secure it onto the edge of the shawl. Repeat this step for all of your fringe, adding two strips of fringe for every inch of the shawl width on either side.

Tips & Warnings
Since your shawl will have beads, it is best to wash it by hand.
