How to Use Yahoo Messenger With Windows 98

Yahoo Instant Messenger is a messaging program that allows users to connect, text chat, video chat and play games with other users across the world. The minimum operating system requirements are that your computer runs Window 98 or higher. To use Yahoo Messenger, download the program, install it, sign in and you are good to go.

      Visit messenger.yahoo.com to download Yahoo Instant Messenger. The requirements are that your computer is running Window 98 or higher, has a Pentium II 233 MHz processor or better and has 64 MB of RAM available for Windows 98 users.

      Click "Download" from the Yahoo Messenger web page and follow the on-screen instructions to download messenger. Several pop-ups will appear during this process. Read each one, and click "OK" to continue to the next page. When the program has finished installing, you may be required to restart your computer.

      Double-click the Yahoo Messenger icon on your desktop, or click "Start" from your Windows 98 task bar and point to "Programs" and look for Yahoo Messenger there.

      Sign-in to Yahoo Messenger. After the program opens, a window will appear for you to sign-in. Use your Yahoo email name and password to sign-in. If you do not have a name and password, visit yahoo.com and click "Sign Up". It is free. Once you have a name and password, type it into the messenger log-in screen and select "Sign in."

      Click "Contacts" on the Yahoo Messenger window to add friends to your list. If someone is already on your list, their name will appear in the window. Double-click their name to send them an instant message and begin chatting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the box that says "Remember my ID and Password" from the log in screen so you won't have to type it in every time you sign in.

  • Yahoo will never ask for your password via email or messenger. If someone asks for your password, don't give it to them.
