How to Measure a Fifth Wheel

Save

Determining the length and height of your fifth wheel is a simple task. Its measurements and weight are typically located on a slip of paper inside one of the cabinets or in the owner’s manual. If the paper and manual are missing or you need to measure your fifth wheel to purchase a cover, this can be done relatively quickly with a tape measure. Two people can perform this task much quicker so it is best to enlist the help of a friend.

Things You'll Need

  • 50-foot tape measure

Determining Overall Length

  • Place one end of the tape measure on the edge of the rear bumper. Have a friend hold the end of the tape measure in place.

  • Place the tape measure on the center of the king pin. The king pin is the protruding part of the trailer that attaches to the fifth wheel hitch. It is located beneath the front cap. Have a friend hold the end of the tape measure in place.

  • Read the measurement. This is the official length of your fifth wheel camper.

Determining Height

  • Stand on the roof of your fifth wheel and lower the tape measure over its side.

  • Place the end of the tape measure on the ground. Have a friend secure it in place to provide an accurate measurement.

  • Place the tape measure on the top of the air conditioning unit. Read the measurement. This is the height of your fifth wheel camper.

Determining Width

Determining Length for a Cover

  • Place one end of the tape measure on the edge of the rear bumper. Have a friend hold the end of the tape measure in place.

  • Extend the tape measure and place it on the edge of the front cap.

  • Read the measurement. This is the length of your fifth wheel. Purchase a cover of the appropriate size. If the length falls between sizes, purchase the larger size.
