How to Install Coleman Gas Lantern Mantles

Gas lanterns offer a signicant amount of light for the cost.

W. C. Coleman began selling his lanterns at the beginning of the 20th century. These innovative gas-powered lighting devices create light with a burning mantle. The first time these mantles are lit, the fabric burns away, leaving a net of ash in its place. When the ash is heated with burning gas, it gives off a bright, white light. Installing these mantles requires steady hands and simple knot-making knowledge.

Things You'll Need

• Coleman gas lantern
• Lantern mantle

Instructions

1. Unscrew the ball nut at the top of the lantern.

2. Remove the ventilator and the Pyrex glass globe.

3. Tie the mantle strings in a knot around the burner cap groove with a flat side of the mantle facing the gas generator.

4. Even out the mantle folds and cut away any leftover string.

5. Replace the glass globe and ventilator. Secure with the ball nut.

Tips & Warnings

• Tie the knot firmly, but gently. If you snap the string, reconnect the two string segments with a simple knot.

• Never install a new mantle while the lantern is still hot from recent use.

• Use caution when removing and replacing the fragile glass globe.
