How to Put a Hook on a Fishing Rod
Fishing is a sport that is normally taught within a family, when the children are still young and adventurous. There are many different aspects to learning how to fish, such as spotting a good fishing area, learning how to cast, and attaching the right bait or lure. The first and most important lesson to master when learning to fish is how to attach the hook to the line. Without the hook, you might as well throw the pole at the fish and call it spear fishing. Clipping the hook to the rod is also a preferred storage method for a fishing pole when it's not in use because it keeps everything in one place and prevents tangling.

1
Unlock your reel. For closed-face reels, there may be a locking switch on the reel that you flip as you depress the casting button to free the line. For open-face reels, consult your owner's manual to unlock the line, as these reels can vary in locking mechanisms.

2
Pull the line through the eyelets located along the pole. Typically there are four or more eyelets on a fishing pole.

3
Place the line through the hook eye, then pull the line back up about 2 inches, allowing the hook to dangle. Wrap the line's free end around the line four or five times. This will create a small loop above the hook eyelet.
-
4
Insert the line through the loop above the eyelet. As you do this, you will simultaneously create another loop. Pull the line back through the loop you just made. Pull the line tight to cinch up.

5
Attach the hook to the middle line eyelet on the rod, and reel the line in until it's taut. Place your reel back in the locked position. You can now store your rod without your line or hook becoming tangled.

Tips & Warnings
Be careful when attaching a hook. The barb on a hook is extremely sharp and can pierce the skin easily.
