How to Obtain a Florida Identification Card

Although many residents in the state of Florida use a driver's license as their primary proof of identification, there are those individuals who use state-issued ID cards issued by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. These IDs carry the same legal weight for identification purposes. Despite the existence of new rules intended to help prevent fraud and identity theft, the process of obtaining a legitimate State of Florida Identification Card is simple and convenient.

Instructions

1. Navigate to the official Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website at http://www.flhsmv.gov/offices/index.html. Scroll down until you see your county listed in the blue links provided. Click on your county. Gather information on the address and fees needed.

2. Collect a combination of documents that establishes your identity such as your Social Security card, birth certificate, proof of residential address and the required fee. Visit the Florida New Driver's License and I.D. Requirements site at http://www.gathergoget.com/ to learn about what forms of identification are acceptable.

3. Call the local Driver's License office in your area and make an appointment. Although you are not always required to make an appointment, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles recommends it.

4. Arrive at your appointment on time with the required documents to prove your identity. Fill out an application for an Identification Card and pay the required fee. Have your photograph taken, sign your name on the appropriate form and allow up to 45 minutes for your new Identification Card to be processed.
