How to Make a Paper Origami Chain

Origami is the art of paper folding. According to origami-resource-center.com, origami is believed to have originated in Japan and was first documented in 1797 in the book "Folding of 1000 Cranes" by Senbazuru Orikata. With origami, you can make a variety of items such as paper animals, buildings, boxes and paper chains. If you want to make a paper origami chain, it is very simple, though you may have to practice a few times to get the hang of it.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Lay your paper on a hard, flat surface and fold in half horizontally. Run your fingers along the fold to make a crease.

  • Fold the paper in half horizontally two more times. Your paper will look like a thin strip.

  • Bring the edges of the paper together. This will be a width-wise fold.

  • Fold each side in so the ends meet the crease in the center. Pinch the center where the ends meet to form a "V." This is one link for your chain.

  • Continue to make the links. Depending on what you are making, you may need only a few links, or 30 or more.

  • Hold one of the links between your thumb and index finger so the center is pointing toward you. Squeeze gently. This will cause the "legs" of your link to open slightly, creating a space to thread the next link through.

  • Thread the "legs" of a second link all the way through the spaces of the first. Continue to add an addtional link to the newest link of the chain until you have created your desired chain length.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can create an origami chain with any sized paper.
  • To make sure you are on the right track, the first two links put together will look like an "L." When you add the third link, your chain will look like a "Z."
