How to Fix a Roof Leak on an RV

How to Fix a Roof Leak on an RV thumbnail
An RV roof can be damaged by falling branches and other hazards.

Many RV and camper roofs are made with durable rubber top liners. These roofs typically last several years through normal weather and wear and tear. Some camper and RV roofs need repair sooner if they are subjected to falling tree branches or other hazards, however. If this is the case, a simple but long-lasting fix can restore your RV roof. This fix works for both newer rubber membrane roofs and older metal RV roofs.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the roof with soap and water mixed together in a bucket. The mixture doesn't have to be exact, you just want to get your RV roof clean. Use any soluble soap you have on hand, such as dish soap. Use a rag to scrub rubber-coated roofs and a bristle brush for metal roofs. Rinse the soap off with water. Allow the roof to dry.

    • 2

Remove any loose pieces of roof coating and use contact cement to repair loose roof supports or damaged parts of the frame. Apply the contact cement with a paint brush or roller. Allow these repairs to dry for 15 minutes.

    • 3

Mix the liquid rubber coating in a bucket according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Apply the liquid rubber mixture to your RV roof in a single coat. Use sponges, rollers and brushes to complete this task.

    • 5

Allow the RV roof to dry for an hour or so. The roof is watertight immediately, but avoid walking on the roof until the liquid rubber dries completely.
