How to Hook up Four Speakers Subwoofers to a Car Amp

Subwoofer in an enclosure

How multiple subwoofers are connected to one amp depends on three primary questions: how many channels does the amp have, what is the impedance of the speakers and what is the minimum impedance each channel can handle safely without overloading the amp. For single channel amps, the four speakers will need to use a combination of series and parallel wiring so that the combined impedance the amp sees is acceptable. For four channel amps, it's just a matter of connecting one subwoofer to each channel.

Look up the recommended impedance of the amp. An example would be 2 ohms. Look up the impedance of the speakers. An example would be 8 ohms. If we connect two 8-ohm speakers in parallel, the combined impedance equals 1/2 the impedance of one speaker. This equals 4 ohms. If we connect all four 8-ohm speakers in parallel, the combined impedance is 2 ohms. This is still within the capability of the amp which has minimum allowable impedance of 2 ohms.

Connect all four positive terminals on the subwoofers together using three speaker wires. Also connect all four of the negative terminals on the subwoofers together using three additional speaker wires.

Connect one positive terminal from one subwoofer to the positive output terminal on the amp using the amp's screw down terminals. Connect the negative terminal on the same subwoofer to the negative terminal on the amp.
