Instructions to Crochet a Warm Winter Scarf
People living in northern climates value a good scarf. Anyone who has been in a snowball fight or scraped ice from car windows before dawn knows that having a warm scarf can save your nose and cheeks from cold and pain. Beginning crocheters can create an attractive and welcome gift in just a few hours with very little practice. A thick, warm scarf only needs chain stitch and single crochet to complete, so novices can successfully finish a warm accessory with very little help or problems.

1
Make a loop in the end of the yarn and make chain stitches until the chain measures 6 inches long. The number of stitches will vary depending upon your own crochet style, but the pattern will work the same no matter how many stitches it takes.

2
Turn and single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Single crochet in every chain in the rest of the row.

3
Chain one and then turn. Skip the first stitch in the row and single crochet in every stitch after that, stopping at the end of the row.

Chain one and then turn. Skip the first stitch in the row and single crochet in every stitch in the row after that. Continue making rows like this until the scarf is the desired length. The classic scarf length is 45 inches, but you may want to make it shorter or longer, depending on the scarf's recipient.

Clip the yarn at the end of the row when the scarf is long enough. Pull the tail of the yarn through the last stitch to fasten it off. Weave the tail end of the yarn into the stitches in the previous rows.

Tips & Warnings
For a different look, crochet 20 rows in one color and then 20 rows in another color to make a striped scarf.
Use this project as a teaching tool for children. It is very simple to complete and they may be more likely to learn a new craft if they can wear the results.
