How to Make Magnets Float

Magnets contain two magnetic poles, a north and a south. Both poles have equal magnetic strength. The opposite poles of magnets attract one another. Placing a magnet with the north pole facing next to a magnet with the south pole facing will cause the magnets to attract and stick. When two magnets of the same magnetic pole are facing one another, they will repel each other. With a few items that can be purchased from many hobby and craft stores, you can make magnets repel and, in effect, float.

Things You'll Need

  • Oil-based modeling clay
  • 6” wood dowel or pencil
  • 2 or more ring magnets (pencil or dowel must fit through hole)

Instructions

    • 1

Create a base using oil-based modeling clay. This type of clay stays soft and workable. A ball or square base (1” thick or thicker) works best.

    • 2

Mount the 6” wood dowel or pencil in the center of the clay base. The dowel or pencil should stick straight up without tilting. If the dowel or pencil begins to tilt, add more clay to the base to add support.

    • 3

Place the first ring magnet over the dowel and let it fall to the base.

    • 4

Place a second magnet over the dowel and let it fall. Each magnet should be facing each other with the same pole so that they repel one another. When the magnets repel, the second magnet will float about the first. If the magnets are attracting one another, remove the second magnet and flip it over. Drop the magnet and it should now repel and float.

    • 5

Add and drop more magnets over the dowel or pencil. Make sure to drop the magnets with the same poles facing one another. The stronger the magnets the more can float.
